In the 2023 World Chess Championship held in Kazakhstan, Chinese national Ding Liren defeated players from around the world. According to Reuters, Deng Liren has won the title of 17th world chess champion after a thorny match against Russian-born Ian Nepomniachi.

Deng, 30, won the fast-paced chess playoff by 2.5 points to 1.5 points. The format of the game was shortened in the latter stages of the competition, with some errors from Nepomaniacchi which Deng Liren capitalized on to claim victory.

"The moment Ian lost, it was a very emotional moment and I couldn't control my emotions," Deng Liren said at the press conference. It should be noted that with Deng's victory, China has won the men's and women's world titles. The current female champion of the World Chess Championship is Jovenjin, a compatriot of Deng Liren.
